Listening to God through His Word

Greetings in Christ Jesus and Happy Friday to you! 
I hope and pray you have had a good week. It's been a good one at First Christian Church.
We are taking a brief Summer break from our Wednesday night Meal and Bible Study. We'll resume things on Wednesday, August 07.
During the break, I've planned a few activities for Wednesday night.
We had our first activity/outing this past Wednesday night (June 26). A group of 13 volunteers from FCC served an evening meal for homeless citizens at the Lighthouse Ministries in downtown Lexington. It was a great blessing as we were able to help feed 78 people! We also shared a gospel message of hope before the meal and prayed for and ministered to several guests.
We plan on going again very soon. It's only about a 2-3 hour commitment of time. Please let me know if you are interested.
 
Watching the folks come off the streets to get a meal on Wednesday night reminded me of how so many people are feeling "beaten down" by life.
The enemy wants all of us to question our value as people.
A big way we all beat ourselves down is through "negative self-talk." These are lies from Satan that we come to believe are true.
 
We all talk to ourselves. It's okay, however, as long as we don't answer back, and out loud!
Seriously, I read last week that our internal dialogue (the conversation we have with ourselves) is at a rate of over 1,200 words per minute.
That's a lot of words.
Which ones are we going to believe and which ones are we going ignore?
 
God leaves no room for doubt about how He feels about us.
In Luke 15, Jesus tells three stories -- the lost son, the lost coin, and the lost sheep. It's the same theme in each story. Jesus says, "You are worth finding and you matter!"
Satan is still a persistent presence and will not stop the lies flying our way!
If we're all going to have a lot of internal talk, let's make sure it aligns with God's truth!
Rick Warren writes, "Long before psychology came around, God said your thoughts determine your feelings and your feelings determine your actions. If you want to change your life, you've got to control the way you think."
The Bible teaches the principle in Philippians 4:8. The Apostle Paul tells us what to fix our minds on. Paul writes, "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy -- think about such things."
We all need to do more of this. Even when it seems like the world around us is falling apart, we can be certain that God is still in control!
 
This Sunday (June 30), I am going to talk about meditating on God's word as I begin preaching in the Old Testament book of the Psalms.
