Souper Bowl Sunday - February 11th
February 8, 2024, 2:00 PM
Greetings in Christ!
I hope this email finds you well.
We've had a good week here at First Christian. We were thrilled to baptize Susan Patton into Christ last Sunday (02.04.24) at FCC.

I am super excited about Sunday, February 11th at First Christian Church.
We are calling our Sunday morning worship time "Souper" Bowl Sunday.
As many people realize, the championship game of the National Football League - known as the "Super Bowl" - will be played later that day.

You may ask, "Why are we even talking about a sporting event in church and having a special day relating to it?" That may seem somewhat sacrilegious.
Let me explain my thinking.
In planning the church calendar, I typically use this day in the middle of February as a special day at church to invite folks from the community to come and worship with us.
My prayer is that there will be some folks that attend that do not regularly go anywhere to worship on Sundays and God will touch them while they are here so that they may want to either begin or continue a relationship with Him.

Why call it "Souper" Bowl Sunday?
We'll have soup and sandwiches following our 10:30 am worship service.
Also, we're encouraging everyone to bring cans of soup on that day. Our plan is to donate them to Lighthouse Ministries of Lexington, KY (www.lighthouselex.org).
This will help Lighthouse Ministries as they physically, nutritionally, and spiritually serve people experiencing homelessness and low-income members of our community.

In addition, I am thrilled about our special guests.
Our speaker will be Ben Oldham.

Ben will be sharing his testimony and talking about his life in college football. For over 40 years, Ben served as a game official for Southeastern Conference football games. Starting in the 2016 season, he became the Coordinator of Football Replay for the SEC.

During his career, Ben has worked over 20 NCAA bowl games either on the field or in the replay booth, including the Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Rose Bowl.

Our musical guests on Sunday will be "Two for the Cross."

Steve Burton and Jason Brock are two Jessamine County guys that I worked with on numerous occasions when I preached at Mt. Eden Christian Church.

They are both Gospel Singing and God Loving men that you will enjoy being with.

So who should we be rooting for in the big game on Sunday?

I am pretty confident God isn't too concerned about the outcome.

While I am not a big fan of either the Chiefs or 49ers, I have read some encouraging things from some of the key players on both teams this week.

It sounds like both the starting quarterbacks - Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs) and Brock Purdy (49ers) are Christ followers.

Mahomes has enjoyed a ton of success on the field. With all the success and accolades, he remains an unapologetic believer and follower of Jesus Christ.

Last year, he told Rob Maaddi of "Faith on the Field," a weekly Christian sports talk radio show, the following...“It's like anyone's walk with the Lord in their faith; there have been highs and there have been lows. I think I've learned a ton over these last few years, especially about my relationship with Him. I was baptized when I was 14 years old, and I would say I kind of distanced myself over those next few years. But I've been able to kind of come back and really develop this relationship that's been able to let me go out there and play free and not worry about the moment of the success and or the failure. So that's been my walk and I'll continue to walk and do whatever I can to strengthen my relationship with Him.”

Purdy's story is pretty amazing as he's gone from being the last man picked in the NFL two years ago to being a starting QB in the Super Bowl.

There are some really cool video interviews online in which he talks openly about his faith. On a podcast with Sports Spectrum in August 2021, Purdy said"The bottom line, my identity is in Jesus."

No matter who wins and who loses, I am happy to see some Godly men leading both teams! That is encouraging!

Please come out and join us this Sunday! Bring some friends!
Feel free to wear something from your favorite football team and bring some cans of soup!
It's going to be a great Lord's Day at FCC. I can't wait!

God Bless,
Greg H
