Hello again, and I pray you're having a good end to the week.
Over the past week plus, you've heard me talking about an organized public reading of the Bible taking place in Washington DC, April 18-25, called "America Reads The Bible." This is a national call to ignite revival and unite believers through the power of Scripture.
It's been a good week for this event. There have been several different readers from various backgrounds (Preachers/Authors/Actors) so far. On Tuesday night (April 21st), President Donald J. Trump was one of the readers.
No matter your opinion of the 45th/47th President, you have to admit it was pretty cool having the current President take part in this important event. He read from 2 Chronicles 7. One of the verses the President read was this one -- 2 Chronicles 7:14: "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
And we continue to PRAY for spiritual revival in America!
This event has inspired me. I'd like for us (as a church) to read through the New Testament next week-- Monday, April 27, through Friday, May 1st.
The logistics are such that we can't really do this publicly, but we could read individually.
Would you be willing to read 4 chapters from the New Testament one day, next week? I'll be in contact with you.
In Old Testament times, people did not have copies of God's Word. That made public reading of Scripture very important.
Moses told the people of Israel this in Deuteronomy 31:11: "When all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place which He will choose, you shall read this Law before all Israel so that they hear it."
When God's Word resonates in our minds and hearts, we can grow in our faith.
We can do as Moses told the man who would succeed him as leader of God's people (Joshua) in Deuteronomy 31:7-8: Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you will give it to them as an inheritance. And the Lord is the One who is going ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not desert you or abandon you. Do not fear and do not be dismayed."
God makes the same promise to you and me today. When you are scared and frozen by fear, we can ask God to go before us and prepare the way. And He will! Therefore, let us be confident and unafraid.
I hope and pray we'll see you this coming Sunday (April 26th) at FCC. I'll be wrapping up on the current sermon series on "Ancient Words" with a message on "Hearing and Receiving God's Word." Until then...May God Bless You!
God Bless,
Greg Herriford
