Happy Friday! I pray you are having a good week so far and that you have a wonderful weekend.
The shortened hours of sunlight and the recent preview of winter have made me a little lethargic this week -- I am not ready for cold weather with ice and snow!
In fact, the cold air that moved into our region earlier this week had me thinking of another storm exactly 50 years ago.
It was on November 10, 1975, that a storm on Lake Superior caused hurricane-like winds and resulted in the sinking of the ship Edmund Fitzgerald, killing the entire crew of 29 men. The incident was well captured in a song called "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.
Nearly 2,000 years ago, there were dark, ominous clouds on a day that a man named Jesus died. While only one man died and not 29, the impact of His death has been way more significant.
The exact details of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald remain a mystery.
The details, however, surrounding Jesus' death are without question. Jesus's willing death on the cross freed mankind from the bondage of sin. As Jesus Himself said in Mark 10:45, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
God the Father sent Jesus to earth not to be exalted, but to serve others. Jesus understood the truth about earthly thrones and accolades -- they leave you empty and are only temporary.
Because of His complete obedience, God the Father raised Jesus from the dead and exalted Him to the highest place in heaven.
I am thankful that Jesus came and took the punishment for sin that I deserved. I pray that Jesus would help us all to follow His example of service and humility!
November is packed with special Sundays at FCC. Please keep in mind we have two more "special" Sundays coming up this month. Both of these days will emphasize serving the Lord and will provide our people opportunities to do so.
First off, this coming Sunday, November 16th, is designated "Missions Sunday."
Terry Allcorn, President of Kentucky Christian University, will be preaching at our 10:30 am worship service. We will also have a table in the main foyer containing info on all TEN of our missions we support at FCC.
Then on Sunday, November 23rd, we're having a "Commitment Sunday."
We are encouraging people to make important decisions concerning their FAITH. The decisions are as follows:
#1 - Baptism for those who have never made Jesus Lord and Savior of their life.
#2 - For those who've made that step, make it known that they want to make FCC their church home.
#3 - For those who've done #1 and #2, get involved or MORE involved in ministry at FCC.
Please keep both of these Sundays in your prayers.
I hope and pray we will see you soon!
God Bless,
Greg H.
